Police are investigating a serious crash which occurred in the Shiphay area of Torquay at approximately 5am today.

Emergency services were called to Hamelin Way, Torquay, following reports of a single vehicle collision.

The male driver of a Ford Focus saloon was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth with serious injuries.

No other persons or vehicles are believed to be involved in the incident.

Road closures were put in place between the roundabouts at Kerswell Gardens and Gallows Gate.

Police will shortly be finished with the scene but due to concerns over structural damage to the road, it will not be re-opened until Highways has conducted a full assessment.

A decision by Torbay Council Highways Department will be made on whether to reopen the road mid-afternoon at the earliest, say police.
