On the day a watered-down version of the "pasty tax" kicked in, Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls was in no mood to let it lie. In his keynote conference address, he slammed the Tories throughout. "As for 'we're all in this together', we don't hear that line anymore," he said in his well-received speech to delegates. "Not from a Chancellor who presented the most unfair and unpopular Budget in a generation. A Chancellor who tried to raise taxes on pasties, caravans, churches and charities, but who refuses to look seriously at proposals for a mansion tax."

Westcountry brownie points to Plymouth MP Alison Seabeck. The Member for the city's Moor View constituency recently married her long-time partner Nick Raynsford, The Labour MP for Greenwich and Woolwich in London. And while there is a world of options for their honeymoon, the couple have opted for a short holiday across the Tamar in Cornwall.

Exeter Labour stalwart Saxon Spence, who has dedicated nearly seven decades to the party and flown its flag at county hall for almost 40 years, has been honoured by Ed Miliband. The 83-year-old was presented with the party's prestigious Merit Award by the Labour leader at the party's South West reception.
