Commuters faced a difficult journey into Exeter this morning as heavy snow made driving conditions extremely hazardous in places.

People in Teignbridge awoke to a blanket of snow which started to fall at around 3am.

At Haldon Hill several snow ploughs were needed to keep the road clear in both directions. Rush hour traffic was slow but the road remained passable with care after a full scale operation was launched by the highways authority.

At one point cars heading towards Exeter ground to a halt near the Texaco garage at the top of Haldon Hill, and there were fewer cars than normal on the road. But snow turned to rain at the bottom of the hill and Exeter remained largely unaffected by the snow.
