David Bridgwater hopes The Giant Bolster can redeem himself in the Betfred "Hat Trick Heaven" Chase at Aintree on Saturday.
Second and fourth in the last two Cheltenham Gold Cups, he has failed to match that kind of form in several of his other races, including when well beaten in the Betfair Chase on his seasonal reappearance.
With the ground set to be perfect for the eight-year-old, Bridgwater is keen to see if he is effective at Aintree having never run well there in the past. "It looks a nice option and hopefully he'll have his ground," the Gloucestershire-based trainer said.
"I can't remember the last time he raced on some nice, good ground, it was probably when he was second in the Gold Cup. There was nothing wrong with him at Haydock but he was jumped out wide and last and that's always a good way to get him beaten.
"I'm not saying he would have been placed or anything, but if he'd jumped off handy on the inner he might have finished in front of Tidal Bay and Bobs Worth. It wasn't Denis O'Regan's fault, there was just a misunderstanding with the instructions.
"He's as fresh as paint now and he needs to race. We'll just see what happens.
"My only concern is the track. He's never run well there, but in the past he's gone after a hard race at Cheltenham and that's not the case now. I could give a million excuses as to why he won't win, but I hope he shows everyone what a good horse we know he is," Bridgwater added.
Bridgwater also has no concerns about Wyck Hill taking to the Grand National fences in the Betfred Becher Handicap Chase at Aintree on Saturday.
The former jockey has always viewed the nine-year-old as a potential Grand National horse, but injury ruled him out of last season's big race. When asked if he would find out if Wyck Hill was a Grand National horse this weekend, Bridgwater said: "I already know the answer!
"He'll be grand over the fences, I've no doubt about that. I didn't know what to make of his comeback at Ascot but he's in better shape now. He's a good horse and he wants a trip, which he'll get this weekend."
