An enchanting love story "shot through with Kneehigh DNA" will be staged in Plymouth's newest theatre venue this week.
Written by Anna-Maria Murphy, The Snow Queen tells the story of Luna, who travels far and wide in search of her missing friend. Combining original music, physical theatre, puppetry and performance, the aim is to bring a little magic into the city centre.
The work of acclaimed Cornish writer Anna-Maria Murphy, whose work has been performed by Kneehigh Theatre and on BBC Radio 4, the production is being directed by Nicola Rosewarne.
Nicola, who toured nationally and internationally with Kneehigh for 18 years, as both performer and maker, is now academy manager for creative, cultural and digital industries at City College Plymouth. The Snow Queen has been developed with students studying on the college's new HNC Performing Arts course and the cast will include Josh Fedrick, who played Billy Elliott in the West End show.
"The course at City College is focused on the process of making theatre for performance and enabling students to develop their skills as artists, theatre makers and freelance professionals to a very high level," said Nicola.
"This is the first time The Treasury Bar has been transformed into a theatre and is the first time Plymouth has had a pub theatre venue. The Treasury's team have been very accommodating in helping us to try and do something a bit different in an effort to combat the inertia that can sometimes dog this city. I think it's going to be a really lovely event."
Originally commissioned by The Eden Project, it will also feature the puppet and mask work of Matt Dean.
The Snow Queen is at The Treasury Bar in Catherine Street, off Plymouth's Royal Parade, today and tomorrow at 11am and 3pm.
