A benefits cheat from Penzance who conned thousands of pounds from the system has been sentenced.

Kevin Singh, 43, dishonestly claimed £4,303 in housing benefit, council tax benefit and jobseeker's allowance.

Earlier this week at Truro Magistrates Court, Singh, of Gulval Cross, Gulval, was sentenced to a 12-month community order of 100 hours' unpaid work.

The court heard Singh made false statements to both the Department for Work and Pensions and Cornwall Council and failed to declare he began paid employment in August 2010.

He pleaded not guilty to each of the six offences and a trial was listed for Monday at the magistrates court.

Mr Singh chose not to provide any evidence himself or comment on the prosecution evidence. The court found him guilty on all counts.

He was ordered to pay £2,200 in costs to Cornwall Council.
