STAFF at a Barnstaple college went on strike yesterday in a row over pay.
Petroc held a picket line with 20 staff members after the University and College Union called a national strike for all colleges and universities.
The protest was over cuts in education budgets leading to poorer, more stressful working conditions.
Lecturers have had a 15% pay cut over the last four years but said they were still willing to give up a day’s pay to make a public protest about the attacks on pay and conditions within the sector.
College leaders have said lecturers could have a 0.7% pay rise on the condition they accepted management’s rights to tear up national agreements on working conditions.
The UCU said this is completely unacceptable, with one spokesman adding: “We have to strike because we have no other options left to us.”
