A39 closed after three-vehicle crash leaves man in serious condition

Police and other emergency services are at the scene of a crash near Bideford which has left a man in serious condition.

Police were called to the three-vehicle collision on the A39 at Fairy Cross at 11.55am today.

A black Land Rover Discovery, a red MGF sports car and a foreign-registered Citroen C4 were involved.

A police spokesman said: "Early reports lead us to believe that a man has suffered life threatening injuries.

"He was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth by Sea King helicopter with a collapsed lung and broken ribs."

Another man has reportedly suffered injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Two fire appliances from Bideford and one from Appledore used hydraulic cutting equipment and small tools to release one man and make all the vehicles safe.

Firefighters are still at the scene after fluids were left on the road.

The road is blocked between Abbotsham and Horns Cross.
